9-1-1 dates back to 1967 when the US Congress and the help of Indiana Representative Ed Roush, backed the proposal and passed legislation making 9-1-1 a standard nationwide emergency number. The first 9-1-1 call was made in Haleyville, Alabama on February 16, 1968 by Senator Rankin Fite of Alabama. By the end of the 20th Century 93% of the population of the US has 9-1-1 coverage.

Why 9-1-1? There is no sound theory as to why those numbers but a few theories that were found were that AT&T created and implemented 4-1-1 and 6-1-1 two years earlier, that 9-1-1 was easy to find on a rotary phone, and that Britain’s long time use of 9-9-9 as an emergency number.

Twenty-one years later LaPorte County’s 9-1-1 was born. In 1989 the LaPorte County Commissioners created an ordinance adopting the 9-1-1 system to LaPorte County. In 1990,

The Advisory Board was created along with a Director being hired. On September 17, 1991 five dispatchers were hired mainly coming from the Sheriff’s Department and in October 1991, we moved into our home located in the basement of the Sheriff’s Department. Where we are still located today. The first 9-1-1 call was answered in January 1992.

The first year that statistics could be found was for 1993. We dispatched 59,010 calls in of that 44,644 were Police Calls; 9,611 were EMS calls; and 3580 were Fire calls.
